Father's Day: Traditions, Family & Wine

The dads at Flying Fish Cove span across multiple generations.

We had a chat with the winemaking crew about Father’s Day traditions, family and the best wines to pair with lunch that’s fit for a king.

Mike Bowles

Three adult kids and eight grandsons.

What’s the best part of Father’s Day?
Receiving calls, cards and love from the whole family.

Any family traditions you celebrate on Father’s Day?
Going out for dinner, my choice. Well sort of...

What is the best present that you have received for Father’s Day?
Knowing the whole family is ok and healthy (and a morning hug and coffee from my wife).

If your children were wines what wines would they be?
My kids; full of character, complexity, earthy and genuine flavour. Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

Best food and wine match for Father’s Day lunch?
Roast beef medium rare, roast potatoes, gravy, fresh veggies and a cabernet sauvignon.

Damon Eastaugh

Three kids. Louis (25), Ruby (12) and Flynn (11).

What’s the best part of Father’s Day?
The best part of Father’s Day is that I get to do whatever I want, usually get up early and have a surf, relaxing mid-morning breakfast, coffee, bacon, egg avocado Yallingup wood fired bread and EVOO.

Beach time with the family or camping out in the bush. Grill some meat and drink a hearty bottle of red with my wife. Annoy the kids with dad jokes.

Any family traditions you celebrate on Father’s Day?
Our family traditions that we celebrate on Father’s Day as above.

What is the best present that you have received for Father’s Day?
The best presents that I have received for Father’s Day have come from school projects when the kids were young.

My favourite was my head photoshopped onto a body builder.

If your children were wines what wines would they be?
Flynn - Syrah, big heart likes hugs and dry wit - think fleshy juicy red with some astringency.

Louis - arty deep thinker, loves the ocean, his own man - think Margaret River Cabernet alluring enticing aromas sucks you into layers of flavour and feel.

Ruby - Sparkling Pinot Chardonnay, she loves to dance and is an extrovert - think bubbles.

Best food and wine match for Father’s Day lunch?
A tomahawk grilled on an open flame glugging a 2016 Cabernet Merlot.

Simon Ding

Two kids in the Ding clan. Jarvis (16) and Georgie (14).

What’s the best part of Father’s Day?
Definitely being spoilt by the family. Spending time with family, cooking a nice meal and drinking some nice wine.

Any family traditions you celebrate on Father’s Day?
When I was little my Dad used to have us say ‘all praise to the great one’ whenever he would sit down at the table.

Obviously, he was not serious, but it may give you some idea of my dads sense of humour.

What is the best present that you have received for Father’s Day?
The best present would have to be time spent with the kids without them on their devices.

If your children were wines what wines would they be?
Jarvis - a big rich McLaren Vale Shiraz. Generous and big hearted. Soft and supple. Rich and ever reliable.

Georgie - a bright and vivacious Riesling. Zippy and fresh. Racy and full of personality. A real keeper.

Best food and wine match for Father’s Day lunch?
Margaret River Chardonnay with fresh BBQ’d Garlic prawns and Venison Farm Chorizo for entrée, followed by salt crusted rib eye tomahawk steak cooked over a wood fire served with a potato gratin, fresh garden salad and Margaret River's finest Cabernet Sauvignon.

Blake Garnett

One child, born May this year - Jasper Quin.

What's the best part of Father's Day?
The best part will be: that it’s my first!

Any family traditions you celebrate on Father’s Day?
When I was young I would make tea and bring it to my dad first thing in the morning with a card and present.

What is the best present that you have received for Father’s Day?
I haven’t had one yet… but we’ll see what Jasper comes up with.

If your children were wines what wines would they be?
Jasper would be a vintage 2021 Shiraz Malbec blend. He’s young, lively and sometimes goes bright red.

Best food and wine match for Father’s Day lunch?
Grilled fresh salmon with pumpkin salad and a Wildberry Reserve Chardonnay.
