WINEMAKERS NOTES

Viticulture

The vineyard is planted on Karri loam gravel soils with underlying laterite. Vine rows run north /south down a moderate north facing slope and are clone GinGin with trellis structured to vertical shoot positioning. The vineyard is subject to the cool Southern Ocean breezes and ripens slowly, evenly and with naturally high acidity.

Winemaking

The fruit is handpicked then cooled before whole bunch pressing. New and seasoned barrels are filled directly from the press to enhance complexity. Only the free run fraction is reserved with harder pressings separated to ensure a delicate and fine expression of the fruit in this wine.

The juice is left to ferment spontaneously and can take up to three weeks to ferment with some cooling at the height of ferment. After ferment the barrels are topped and gently stirred with inert gas protection monthly.

A small number of barrels were encouraged to finish malolactic fermentation to ameliorate the natural acidity. After nine months in barrel the wine is assembled in tank and aged on lees to further encourage complexity.

WINE REVIEWS

"Plenty of appeal thanks to the core of juicy fruit - grapefruit and pith with white nectarine and spices all the way through, quite moreish with some savouriness too. The amount of new oak is not known, but it is sweetening the wine while creamy lees build up the palate. The lemony acidity is key and keeps everything in check." - 94 Points (Silver), Jane Faulkner - Halliday Wine Companion.

"An expression that flows beautifully, is supple and delivers a full flex of the variety with balance and finesse." WAGFG 2023 Top 25 Wines.

"Fresh lemon and ripe yellow apple meet saffron spice, turmeric and white miso. An attractive whiff of brine and a crushed-shell character add further to the impressive breath of flavour." Silver - 2023 International Wine & Spirits Competition.

"Here is a really impressive chardonnay offering plenty of those generous flavours but delivered with a deft touch of finesse. Aromas of white peach and grapefruit with a little brioche complexity. The palate has lots of drive with deeply flavour fruit supported by some nice oak treatment. The lively minerally acidity sustains a long finish with a slight savoury flourish." 93 Points - Wine Pilot
