Mother's Day: Meet the Women of Wine
Apr 22, 2024
Where would we be without our mums? Meet the women of wine at Flying Fish Cove. Spanning across multiple generations, we chat about Mother’s Day traditions, family and their favourite celebratory drinks.
Lyn Eastaugh
Lyn has been involved with Flying Fish Cove and Wildberry Vineyard since its inception. Throughout the year you’ll find Lyn tending to the vines at Wildberry with her son Damon.
Each vintage she helps hand-pick the grapes with her daughter Jonica and bakes the best fruit cake for the winemaking crew. Our chief winemaker Simon is still haggling her for the recipe!
How many children do you have?
I have two children and five grandchildren. My grandson Louis is currently doing a vintage at the winery and has done two others before that.
Best part of Mother's Day?
I don’t like the way it has been commercialised but I do enjoy the opportunity to be with family.
Any family traditions you celebrate on Mother's Day?
I like to keep it simple and we will catch up for a lunch or dinner with as many of the family that are down.
What is the best present that you have received for Mother’s Day?
The best present is visits from my children or grandchildren and their spouse or friends.
What wines would your children be?
Chardonnay because it’s special.
What’s your favourite wine to share on Mother’s Day?
Wildberry Reserve Chardonnay.
Lynn with her winemaker son Damon.
Waveney Eastaugh
Waveney, the latest member of the Flying Fish crew, brings her sales expertise and love of wine to trade and in-store tastings. It's a family affair as she works alongside her winemaker husband Damon.
How many children do you have?
A girl, Ruby, aged 15, a boy, Flynn, aged 13 and stepson Louis, who is 27.
What’s the best part of Mother’s Day?
Enjoying being appreciated by your family, but also making both our Mum’s feel special and appreciated on the day.
Do you have any family traditions that you celebrate on Mother’s Day?
We have a family surf with the kids in the morning and breakfast together, then take both our Mum’s out for lunch or host a lunch at home for them. For a few years, we made a day of picking olives including a lovely picnic lunch. If the opportunity arises to pick olives, we make this a special day to be shared with all our family. We are blessed to have 2 lovely Mums that also enjoy each other’s company.
What is the best present that you have received for Mother’s Day?
Always the cards and hand-picked flowers.
If your children were wines, what wines would they be?
My daughter, Ruby would be the Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay – fun, powerful, bubbly personality and kind. Flynn would be the Sauvignon Blanc Semillon – salty, lovable, refreshing and full of vitality. Louis would be the Piquette – funky, fun, creative and at one with nature.
What’s your favourite wine to share on Mother’s Day?
We like to start with a bottle of the Flying Fish Sparkling Pinot Noir Chardonnay to get the party started, and a bottle of Flying Fish Chardonnay with lunch or Cab Merlot (depending if with seafood or meat) on Mother's Day.
Jonica, Lyn and Damon Eastaugh.
Jonica Eastaugh
Jonica is close to her mother Lyn, spending time between Perth and Lyn’s home in Dunsborough. You’ll find Jonica and Lyn picking end rows at Wilberry Vineyard. They just love being out there!
How many children do you have?
I have 2 daughters.
What’s the best part of Mother’s Day?
Celebrating life together.
Do you have any family traditions that you celebrate on Mother’s Day?
We don’t have traditions. Our plans are open, flexible and usually decided at the last minute; either a swim at Yallingup or a picnic at the dam at Flying Fish.
What is the best present that you have received for Mother’s day?
Handmade cards, poems and flowers.
What wines would your children be?
If my daughters were wine they would definitely be the Flying Fish sparkling. They are vibrant, interesting and creative and have both added so much love and light to life.
I'm also one of Louis’ godmothers. Louis would definitely be a new beer that they are trialling. He is innovative and creative like his father (Damon) and grandfather (Geoff).
What’s your favourite wine to share on Mother’s day?
Will be celebrating with the new vintage of the Flying Fish sparkling.
Jenny Quinlan
Jen is the ray of sunshine in the office. If you've ordered wine online or over the phone, you've likely dealt with Jen. She keeps everything running smoothly by overseeing accounts and assisting with daily administration.
How many children do you have?
I have a son and daughter both in their 20s.
What’s the best part of Mother’s Day?
Spending time with the family followed by an afternoon on the couch reading my book.
Do you have any family traditions that you celebrate on Mother’s Day?
A family dinner.
What is the best present that you have received for Mother’s Day?
The cards are my favourite, I keep them all. Followed by a pair of pyjamas I received years ago and can’t throw them out!
If your children were wines, what wines would they be?
My son Oliver would be a Wildberry Estate Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. “Rich, powerful, generous”… well, he is rich in talent! He has a huge presence as well as being a mellow, generous guy. He is a reserve wine to me as he is definitely a keeper! He has aged well.
My daughter Annabelle would be a Flying Fish Cove Sparking Pinot Noir Chardonnay. “The ultimate aperitif, bubbly, creamy and delicate, it will light up all your parties!”. This describes her perfectly. She is effervescent, cheeky, kind, always giving and has a wicked sense of humour. She is a ray of sunshine and absolutely lights up a party!
Abbey and Kerry Bennett.
Kerry Bennett
Kerry has been part of the Flying Fish Cove family for over 10 years and wears many hats in the organisation.
Her daughter Abbey used to work in the lab and helps out in the winery on uni breaks. You'll also find Kerry's fur-babies Daisy and Poppy at the Fish. They’re the first to greet you with a warm welcome and a pat at the winery.
How many children do you have?
Three, all over 23 now and living away from home.
What’s the best part of Mother’s Day?
Giving thanks to my mum for all her love and support and getting appreciation from my kids.
Do you have any family traditions that you celebrate on Mother’s Day?
Breakfast in bed with Champagne!
What is the best present that you have received for Mother’s Day?
We don’t do presents for Mothers Day. The best gift is love and cuddles!
If your children were wine what would they be?
I have 2 sparklings full of bubbles – that like to shock me like the popping of a champagne cork, and one that is a thinker more of a deeper layered cabernet sauvignon.
What’s your favourite wine to share on Mother’s day?
Flying Fish Cove's sparkling pinot chardonnay or a fresh Great Southern riesling served with a Barbequed Thai spiced snapper!
